Whiskey’n’Whiskers, Top Shelf Selection: Aug 30
I recall mentioning on Tuesday that the i7, IV7 change tends to hang with the cool kids and then along comes The New Nothings to prove the point, ‘cause it gets no cooler than these guys. Btw, this isn’t a setup, honestly - I wrote about Gee Sonnit the day before we really sat down to get into “Last Laugh”, the latest song from one of our favourite bands. One never knows quite what to expect with a new ‘The New Nothings’ song. Of course, everything in their catalog is a gem, but will we get some ‘Robinhood’ alt-rock or some jazz/funk maybe, or the humour of ‘Dulce De Leche’ or ‘Nam Pla’, perhaps with a side of Urban vibes? Is there a more creative band than this?
Well, “Last Laugh” serves up the whole banquet of styles. That progression permeates this song but doesn’t dominate. Listen to the way the harmony changes as they transition through the VII chord on the word “shot”… and speaking of which, how captivating is it that the word “shot” appears in the same musical ‘space’ in the verses four times, the last time with a different meaning? This is masterful songwriting and orchestration from a band with extraordinary attention to detail, lining up points of harmonic, melodic and lyrical interest this way. The vocal that delivers these verses has that ability to stretch the pitch and tempo at will before landing like a precision instrument - the word “fun” 46 seconds in is just pure gold, for example. And the argument between the two parties is just so engrossing too. I don’t “know the BTS” and I’m not sure I’d want to get involved if I did, because this is a spicy conversation, but it’s tinged with humour too.
The funky guitar rhythms in this song are so on-point, and the drum fills in the instrumental bridge, and just before the chorus repeat, are mind-blowing. They make you wait for that chorus too, although the lead guitar motif in the intro hints at it. And it is well worth the wait! The vocal harmonies in the chorus are just wonderful, and the way the melody really leans into the G# makes for wonderfully rich sounds over those chords. Don’t forget to track that bass guitar either, pushing things along with minor pent’ licks and the groove of a master, thankfully mixed with clarity so we can revel in the tune. It is a rare treat this perfect marriage of melody, groove, harmony and words. As ever, it is difficult to place ‘The New Nothings’ into a genre box, so let’s just say this will appeal to anyone who has a pulse.
A super groovy song about deciding to retire!
